Earthquakes are a powerful and destructive natural phenomenon that can strike at any moment. The Earth's Layers

Plate Boundaries

Meanwhile, convergent plate boundaries are where two plates collide, and one gets forced under the other plate in a process called subduction. In contrast, transform plate boundaries occur when two plates slide past each other in opposite directions.

When an earthquake occurs, it sends out seismic waves- three primary types are P-waves, S-waves, and surface waves. Seismologists use these waves to help determine an earthquake's magnitude and location.

Measuring Earthquakes

Scientists use the Richter Scale to measure the magnitude of earthquakes. However, nowadays, they use the moment magnitude scale to measure seismic activity, which is much more accurate.


The Stages of an Earthquake

An earthquake occurs in three stages- foreshocks, the main shock, and aftershocks. Foreshocks and aftershocks are minor earthquakes that happen either before or after the main shock.
